Never Underestimate the Power of a Conversation

It’s been a long time coming… and it’s finally happening. We have been wishing and hoping and dreaming and planning on doing a podcast for a really long time, and the time has COME! We are Colleen and Colleen (CB AND CS) and we own a kindness lifestyle brand inspired by our obsession for graphic tees and our desire to make the world a better place. We knew there was a need for what we wanted to do, so we decided to go for it! 5 years ago we opened EVERYKIND, formerly Mama Said Tees for our long time followers. We design messages of kindness, positivity, love, etc, and we believe that if your shirt can serve as a walking billboard, the message on it should be a good one. We want you guys to be a part of our conversations because you show us so much support as is, but there is so much more to every single design we slap on something. There are limits to what we can really accomplish on social media, and we feel like our messages are too important to stop there.

“So many valuable things have come to our lives because of simple conversations” -CB

It took us a long time to decide what to call this podcast, but we went back to the roots of our journey, which was a customer/shop owner Etsy Convo 7 years ago. It started with the power of a conversation. Here goes:

March 10, 2012

CB: Hi Colleen so i’m obviously colleen and i’m trying to get something like this for my friend Colleen. This is so strange. Anyways, I was wondering if it is possible to make this, but with some of the lyrics from “God Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts?? Let me know if this is possible – it is going to be their 1st dance song I believe! Thank you!

CS: Hi Colleen! You won’t believe it but MY best friend is also a Colleen and she is getting married in December!!!! Too funny!!! I have done that song before it is perfect! I will get you a proof sometime today! Do you know their wedding colors? And are the fonts ok? Let me know! 🙂

And then it went on. And on. And on. And never ended. And now here we are today. That one little conversation changed the trajectory of our lives. We became really good long distance virtual pals and obsessed over the fact that we were both Colleens and our best friends names were both Colleen. Over the past 7 years we have been brewing up something really special and it was just written in the stars that we should team up, join forces, and start a business. We believe that it is because we are so different in so many ways that this all works because the bottom line is that we just want every single person to know that they are deserving of love and kindness! We took a chance and knew it wasn’t going to be easy but we knew that anybody who was willing to take a chance on US was worth doing this for.

We know that life isn’t all rainbows and butterflies and that being kind is hard, in fact, CS says that “you can plan a pretty picnic but you can’t predict the weather”. 5 days after we opened our little online kindness spreading shop, CS’s sister Shannon was brutally murdered by her ex husband who then killed himself in front of her two sons and parents. Little did we know or believe that something that could have made us want to throw in the towel one week in made us even more certain that what our world needed was us to be strong together and spread GOOD in a world where bad things happen. We thought that by continuing to share our message, “if we could make a difference in just one person’s life, then it would be worth it” -CS.

Shannon was 40 years old. She had no idea this was coming. She didn’t have a will. She didn’t get to leave a note. She was taken from our lives just like that, leaving her 2 boys to be parentless and in desperate need of what our mission would become. Our 3rd design “Let Your Smile Change the World” was in honor of her beautiful smile that changed the lives of many and we raised over $15,000 for the boys’ future.

CS and her husband Doug moved from his hometown of St. Louis to Colleen’s hometown of Indianapolis with their two children, decided they wanted to raise the boys, got pregnant with one more soon after and named her Shannon. So many people prayed for us and showed their support and on some level, we knew that we could make a difference in the lives of others. We didn’t want ANYONE to ever feel alone. We wanted to honor Shannon and let her live on through a legacy that is more than just a message on a t-shirt. It’s all of the conversations we have, going back to the first all the way to the one we had after this episode was recorded: The conversations that take place behind the scenes here at EVERYKIND to the conversations we have with you on social media, in dms, via email. They all string together and bring so much life and meaning to what we do.

We are so happy to have you guys be a part of our new version of a conversation and we challenge you to be proactive when it comes to all of your conversations. The best thing that has ever happened to us started with a simple online convo. We will you to never underestimate the power of a conversation. It is what it is… but it becomes what you make it. We hope that tuning in to every single one of our podcasts will inspire you in some way. We hope it encourages you to find good every single day. That is our goal. And we are so so so happy to let you know… you fit here.
